Set on Lanzarote’s eastern shoreline, Matagorda is a small, compact, easy going seaside resort, with everything you need for your holiday close to hand. The busy party town of Puerto del Carmen is just a five-minute drive away so if you like gentle days and hectic nights, you have the best of both worlds. Matagorda is only 15 minutes from the airport by car, and in fact you can walk there along the sea front!
The town centre is about a mile away from the attractive, unspoiled, blue-flag sandy beach which joins up with Puerto del Carmen in one direction and to Playa Honda and Arrecife in the other. The beach is popular for windsurfing and other water sports. The town is a particular favourite with Irish people, both living here and visiting, (but not as popular as next door Puerto del Carmen where there are over forty Irish bars to choose from!)
Matagorda
History
Matagorda was originally a suburb of the best known holiday resort on the island, Puerto del Carmen. However, over the years it has flexed its muscles and established an identity in its own right, building a two-tiered complex of restaurants and bars set around an attractive town square. The main focus is the town’s wide promenade with its waterside bars and restaurants. Matagorda makes an excellent base for exploring the island, as the busy capital of Arrecife is literally down the road, and most of the major sights are within easy reach.
Things to do
This is a family-oriented place, relatively compact and pretty flat, so it’s easy to push a buggy around if you have young children with you, or a wheelchair.
When the kids have had enough of the beach, take the shuttle bus to the huge Rancho Texas Zoo, a Wild West theme park with treasure hunts, canoeing and some amazing wildlife that comes in a whole range of sizes and strengths!
